Lake HolidaysNew Zealand has many beautiful lake destinations. There's plenty of choices for water-skiers, fishermen, swimmers and boatie's and most of the lakes area have wonderful hiking trails, scenery and birdlife. There are glacial Lakes, dune lakes, crater lakes, mountain lakes, volcanic lakes, and hydro lakes and canals. A natural playground for recreation, and a holiday spot for adventures and leisure seekers. Often framed by spectacular mountains, and stocked with trout. Many of the North island lakes are the result of ancient volcanic eruptions, the biggest of these being Lake Taupo the size of a small country and one of our top trout fishing destinations. The Rotorua district has 16 lakes, 15 which are fishable. All lakes are easily accessible by car and most can be fished from the shoreline. At Kai Iwi In Northland there are three beautiful dune lakes fringed with pure white sand. Near Levin on the West Coast of the North Island the dune lake Papaitonga is edged with wetlands that are great for bird watching. Most of the South Island lakes were born from the same kind of glacial action that created the Fjords. Traveling south along State highway 1 the beautiful colour of Lake Tekapo is such a stark contrast to the barren and yellowed hills and then Lake Pukaki where you can often see the white peaks of Mt Cook looming up in the distant end of the lake. Lakes Alexandrina, Ohau, Hawea are all just off the main highway and well worth taking the time to visit. My favorite is Lake Ohau, just 10 minutes off the main highway between Twizel and Omarama this hidden jewel is surrounded by Mountain peaks, snow capped in the winter, sweltering hot in summer and so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The spectacular lakes of Wanaka and Whakatipu offer any array of accommodation options and activities. The South Island Lakes offer both summer and winter holiday destinations and the weather extremes to match! OHAU LOG HOUSEThis traditional log Cabin is nestled in a sheltered valley in the Ohau Village complex. The cabin enjoys spectacular views from every window. Lake Ohau with the Ben Ohau mountain range towering over it is your vista from the front of the house. Through the reserve you catch a view of Lake Middelton and at the back of the house look up towards the ranges and check out the ski conditions at Ohau Ski Fields. The Cabin is large; accommodating up to 8 people comfortably, and has everything you should need for a weekend escape or a long summer holiday. There are plenty of activities in the region with the Lakes ideal for water sports and boating in the summer, a favorite spot for anglers, heaps of hiking trails, mountain biking trails, and in the winter there's skiing and ice skating. This is a special place some days its so quiet you could hear a pin drop, it is a place where you feel on holiday the moment you walk in the door. It is a place where you don't have to feel guilty spending the day with a book. Prices range from $170 per night to $220 depending on the time of the year. Specials are often run for early bird season bookings. Email enquiries to clare@holidayhomecare.co.nz or call 021 226 9068. Availability calendar below:
